The 2014 NFL Free Agency period is set to officially kick off today, so I thought it would be a good idea to give you some idea of how the timeline flows and what the important times are.
First, today at noon eastern time (Saturday, March 8th), teams can begin to meet with free agents and negotiate deals. This window is usually referred to as the “tampering window”. Previously to the official establishment of this window, teams would illegally and usually blatantly meet with free agents anyway.
The window lasts for three days. So on Tuesday, March 11th, at 4 pm eastern time, players can officially sign deals and teams can announce them. There is a catch to this however. Only UNRESTRICTED free agents AND their agents may meet and negotiate with teams during this period. Players who are not unrestricted free agents must wait until after the official start time on Tuesday. Additionally, players that do not have an agent must also wait until the Tuesday deadline.
So, the two big deadlines are:
Saturday, March 8th at 12 PM – Negotiation Window Opens
Tuesday, March 11th at 4 PM – Official Start of Free Agency and Deals Can Be Signed
