Browns Use Transition Tag On Center Alex Mack

The Cleveland Browns have decided to use the transition franchise tag to keep Pro Bowl Center Alex Mack on the team.

The transition tag guarantees Mack will be the highest paid Center in the NFL, at least for one season.  The tag will pay Mack $10 million for the 2014 season.  Mack may still negotiate with other teams, but the transition tag gives the Browns the right to match any offer.

The team confirmed this in a subsequent release.

  1. I didn’t think a transition tag awarded the team if the player left. The franchise tag does, but I do not think the transition tag does… does it?

The benefit of the transition tag is that the Browns have the ability to match any offer.
