Source: Browns Draft Strategy To Be Fluid, Not Set In Stone

A team source has told DPN that the Cleveland Browns draft strategy is not built around a particular player or position, but rather is said to be fluid and built around contingency plans in the event that certain players are gone.  GM Ray Farmer is said to be building his big board based on scouting reports, film, as well as Combine performance and interviews.  Once the team’s big board is set, the team will build contingency plans around the various draft day scenarios.

What does this mean? Essentially, Farmer is not yet sold on one particular player or position.  I’ve been hearing reports that the Browns are “all in” on Sammy Watkins, or “all out” on Johnny Manziel, but this is simply not the case.  While I have been hearing that the Browns draft board is beginning to take shape, it’s a far way from finished, and according to the “little bird”, the Browns are committed to keeping their options as open as possible.

  1. I hope they are keeping all their options open and going after the best players for our team and not going after a player just because of who he is . Been there with Weeden,Brady Quinn, Trent Richardson and the list goes on and on. Those players turned out to be a real bust. We need players who LOVE the game and are not just interested in the Money or stuck on themselves.

  2. It seems like common sense at this stage in the game. If anyone has their board set in stone this early (while the combine is still taking place and pro days haven’t happened) then it would be a major mistake.

I like the position the Browns will be in for the draft. We have plenty of picks to work with and a deep draft class. I am excited to see what we do. There are a lot of players in this draft that would look good in Orange & Brown.

    • Yeah, I put this out for a couple reasons. First, I read some post today about how the Browns were completely against drafting Manziel, which is decidedly false. Not saying they’re set on taking him either, just the entire notion that they’re all in or all out on anyone is just nonsense.

Second, the previous FO was very much all in on certain players. Big departure by Farmer from the Lombardi era. Thought it was worth highlighting.
